Both our goals were as a result of us playing the ball on the deck…… With Wootton being involved in the first and then assisting the second? I see we’ve nominated our scapegoat again. Do not think any of us are looking or using him as a scapegoat. Its a fact he hasn,t looked as good a player since that short period out and i doubt he,s thinking himself that he,s hit top form recently. Pointless making excuses for players and pretending they are doing a good job when they are not.

I maintain the analogy about him and his marker(s) looking like dancers in an Usher video when we try to play it over the top to him. I appreciate it’s literally not his decision how his team-mates attempt to get the ball to him, but if last night proved anything, it was that we shouldn’t even be trying to play like that.

Dreadful match, 1st half from County, pitch and officiating. Salford City would give Sale Sharks a game. County rescued by a 20 minute purple patch where we did the things we're good at. Would have gone on to win but for some shocking time wasting, anti football tactics from Salford taking the wind out of our sails. All in all, poor but we're 2nd with a game in hand after a very poor month so still, just about, on course to escape this awful league in the right direction. Agree with most of what you say apart of it being an awful league. All of us couldn,t wait to get back into it after years of the non league scene, but after 2 seasons this now is not good enough. There will be salfords in div.1 but just better at doing what they did by being less obvious. The problem that drags this league down is that are simply too many teams who's ambition doesn't go higher than by simply staying out of the bottom 2. They're, mostly, very good at the shithousery stuff and that's why I think it's an awful league. I actually thought the standard in the Conference, especially that last year when we won it, is much higher than L2. I agree there are Salford types in L1 but with 4 down, you're far less likely to get away with it in L1.

Especially when we made a team with one of the most goals conceeded in the league look like one with the best defence when we did. That first half when we only had that to offer we looked a side struggling in the league rather than a promotion candidate.

I wouldnt say its nominating a scapegoat, more people picking up that a player might not be quite playing at the ability which they can do. Certainly the case with me. As I said previously, end of last season we massively missed him. This season I havent quite seen enough from him.

Think the problem with the ref was the lack of consistency. Sometimes he was happy to let Horsfall / Smith wrestle, other times he'd blow the whistle for what looked like fairly innocuous stuff. Admittedly I haven't seen the replays, but it felt like lots of 50/50s in the ground, the sort of thing where most refs favour the defender, but he seemed to give a bit more to the attacker than usual. That played in their favour first half as we were appalling and they were doing most of the attacking, but I did think the free kick that led to their second goal was one of the clearer fouls on Smith. You’re right on ref’s consistency and the foul on Smith which led to their goal is a case in point. It was right in front of me on the side and Smith clearly pulled Horsfall back twice in that grapple, then when Fraser does it back, free kick to Salford. If it was a foul then it should have gone the other way first.

There is no doubt that he hasn’t quite been the same player since his injury, but DC said post match it was a tactic to go long to counter the pitch (although I’m not sure I think it was that bad given that when we chose to knock it around we did so without a problem) and he also said post Newport that it was a tactic to beat Newport’s press. Wooton is capable of playing perfectly well when we keep it on the deck, as last night showed. DC just needs to make sure that’s what they are told to do.

Not scapegoating at all. He definitely played his part in last nights 2nd half. But you can't deny he's not been as effective as we'd of liked since his return.

Nowhere near as effective as he can be, but that doesn’t change the fact that I’m seeing people claim we’re a worse side with him in the team, yet he was involved in every decent chance against Newport and in both goals last night. He’s still making a very worthwhile contribution.

I pondered on the drive home last night as to where I stand regards Wootton and have come to the conclusion that my dislike of the style of football we lull ourselves into playing when he is in the side is strongly influencing my current judgement, and that is not necessarily his fault. It frustrates me, with all of the technically gifted players we have in our side, that we, consciously or otherwise, revert to a very direct style of play for too much of a game when Wootton plays.
There is absolutely no reason why we cannot use his ability as a focal point to keep more than one opposition player occupied, freeing up space for others and allowing us to play football. He has feet, play into them and use him as a lovely little wall pass to get Sarce, Bailey, Powell, Richards etc into good positions with the ball at their feet. Or get him on the half-turn and feeding runners beyond him. Have him feed it wide and then stick a cross in for him to power home. Don't spend large portions of a game getting the ball to a full back to them pump a long diagonal somewhere in the vague direction of his head and then act surprised when he has to wrestle with some oaf (I say this as a centre back myself!) who is going to pin him, wrestle him and pull his shirt, seemingly without penalty. I get the pitch was crap last night, but we should still be looking to play football first and foremost instead of going direct. I don't expect us to play Pep-ball for 90 minutes of every game, but I do think we under-utilise our clearly gifted midfield by defaulting to using Wootton as an 'out' when he plays.

Absolutely spot on that. Play the ball into his feet and the centre back has to go through him to get the ball. Stick it in the air and it’s a lottery as to which way the decision goes. Never mind the difficulty of a striker getting the correct direction and pace on a header to a team mate. Kane played far more intelligent balls when he came on which 100% helped our cause.

I don’t think we’ll see the best of Wootton until we have overlapping wide defenders that cross the ball regularly. I bet he’s counting down the days until MSH and Rydel are back.
Todd Kane looks more than capable of fulfilling the role on the right. The jury’s still out on Bristow and Touray imo

The jury’s still out on Bristow and Touray imo I’m hoping last night will be a turning point for Touray, great move for his goal and he did well after coming on. He had a decent spell earlier in the season when he was linking well with Pye, I was thinking we were starting to see why we signed him but it was short lived because he got injured, then he came back and Pye got injured and his form dipped.

Completely agree with what you say on Touray. His confidence has been knocked and he needs building back up again. Hopefully that cameo last night was a step towards that. I certainly haven’t written him off

Woots found space in the penalty area on a few occaissions last night, but the cross failed to materialise or was too poor to find him. If we had decent deliveries into the box more consistently, he'd bag far more goals.
