The next level is winning 1 tournament. Southgate did a very good job but I can't think of anything that was remarkable. I may be missing something though? At the end of the day people don't remember losing finalists. I'd rather we won 1 WC/Euros then failed to qualify for 1 like Italy then consistently reach the last 4 but never make it. Course they remember finals. He took us to two, and a semi of the WC. We’ve been through this a million times so doesn’t need doing again but we’ll see how good a job he did over the next 12-24 months when we don’t do as well. He did a good job, no doubt. It’d be a hard heart to take that away from him. But what’s the point in doing it over and over? He was always going to leave after the last tournament, win it or not. It was obvious he was coming to the end.

In the past 12 months alone under Southgate we failed to beat Denmark, Slovenia, Iceland, Ukraine and North Macedonia. I really don’t think we’ll miss him as much as you suggest. I respect what he did but there was nothing remarkable about it at all.

I respect what he did but there was nothing remarkable about it at all. I'm not so bothered about how we did in qualifying games. I think there's always been a question of how many big sides we beat in major tournaments under him too as well as the conservative style. It was consistent and churned out results but we rarely played excellently. It's probably only Euro 2020 where we went beyond what you'd hope for based on who we played. He just didn't look like someone that was going to win a tournament for us. WC 2018 - Beat Tunisia and Panama. Lost to Belgium in the groups. Colombia on pens. Sweden probably our best performance then lost to Croatia after going back into our shell at 1-0. Euro 2020 - Beat Croatia (good result) and Czech Republic. Drew with Scotland. Beat Germany (excellent result), Ukraine and Denmark before losing to Italy. Our best tournament under him but again we went into our shell after an early goal. WC 2022 - Beat Iran and Wales then drew with the USA. Beat Senegal before losing to France. Euro 2024 - Beat Serbia but drew with Denmark and Slovenia scoring 2 goals in total and being outplayed by Denmark. Beat Slovakia in ET with a 91st min equaliser, Switzerland on pens with a 80min equaliser, then the Dutch with a 90th min winner before being beaten by Spain. A consistent and very good record considering how much England under performed in major tournaments before him but I think him and his ideas were starting to look tired and we rightly decided to "twist".

So we tried the system for 20 mins in training apparently... I've listened and that isn't a misquote. Very cavalier for our hardest competitive game in the Nations League so far and someone supposedly auditioning for the permanent job - does he know the FA are looking elsewhere and has been given an "experimental" brief?

It’s just disrespectful tbh, isn’t it. Nothing said he can’t be arsed like not bothering to set up properly against a side that hasn’t had a single scalp in 20’ years. Dismally embarrassing. He doesn’t deserve the job. That simple.

Greece have never scored at Wembley (according to the commentary) and they've scored twice in 1 game and won

Listened to first half while working and watched second when home. Shocking. Actually pleased that we lost because I can't get on with Carsley who looks like a personality by pass to me.Heard him interviewed on no left back in the squad and he offered up Cole Palmer, left back!!! Didn't happen but if thats in his thinking wow. No shape, no pattern, poor defensively and lacking a cutting edge and Pickford has always been down my list of keepers, his playing out from the back looks so laboured. Pay money and get Eddie Howe, now.

As bad as the bad faith bores who go AT LEAST SOUTHGATE ISNT HOLDING US BACK111! forgetting that Southgate wasn’t sacked.

He's got to be out for the job now regardless of performances. He can't even say he wants the job - the most basic requirement but also won't rule himself out. He seems to want to return to the lower profile U21s.

It will be remembered, it was a good achievement, but at the end of the day it's winning that counts in professional sport. You count major trophies not major finals whether that's international football, domestic football, tennis, whatever. I'm not disagreeing he didn't do a good job - in fact, he did a very good job but he won't be remembered as favourably as the next manager who wins a major tournament for us even if that is all he (or she) does imo. Tell that to anyone who has ever won a silver or bronze at the Olympics Or the people who decided 2nd and 3rd in the Prem was more worthy than winning either the FA cup or the League Cup.

And working with players on things for 20 minutes here and there is why certain successful club managers won’t touch international football.

He’s spoken poorly but ultimately he wants a job at the end of his time as interim manager. Whether that’s as the permanent manager or back with the U21s

He seems to want to return to the lower profile U21s. www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/3666913730 June 2016 " England Under-21 manager Gareth Southgate has no interest in succeeding Roy Hodgson as boss of the senior national team.
The 45-year-old has not been offered the role or spoken to the Football Association since the weekend.
Hodgson resigned after four years in charge following the shock Euro 2016 last-16 defeat by Iceland on Monday.
Southgate was considered as a possible temporary appointment while the FA searched for a successor to Hodgson.
BBC Radio 5 live senior football reporter Ian Dennis said the England job is "not what Gareth Southgate wants at this stage" either on a permanent or interim basis."
