You're massively wrong I'm afraid (assuming I'm reading your post correctly and you think under Southgate we were your 2nd point above?). Under Southgate we were your 1st point - we got the results and were successful because he improved the level of performance beyond what it had been previously. You don't "luck" your way to 2 Finals, Semi and a QF. Of course you can luck your way through cup competitions. United won the FA cup last year whilst objectively being not very good, Portugal 2016 etc etc. United beat City in the final. Do you think they were lucky to do that? I saw a different game I think, or I may be misremembering.

What qualifies him to manage the U21s? If that's his level last night then I wouldn't trust him to manage a primary skoo team. He won the U21's Euro's beating Spain in the final. I think he's earned his spurs as U21 manager I think I understand your position. Winning is success, second is abject failure. And don't get me wrong, that's fine. Holistically speaking, in the context of the 'international setup' is the only role of the U21s manager to win things out of interest? Or does it also incorporate preparing the next generation of full internationals? I guess I'm asking if there is an argument to say that if you think we've been failing at senior international level (which I perceive that you do), then should Carsley not be considered part of the problem? I seem to recall a certain manager who was highly thought of in the sub-senior ranks of a Premiership football club who, when it came to exposure to a certain lower/none league football team, was absolutely f*cking crap. Which brings into question (in my mind) whether managing younger players to success necessarily qualifies you as a good football manager at senior level. Is it all about winning? Is that role even actually about winning at all? I won't dismiss Carsley by suggesting he lucked his way through the tournament he won...

Personally I'd say the prime role of the U-21 manager is to highlight the young talent of the nation & bring them together & prepare them for possible progression to the full international set up. Giving them experience of coming together outside of their club set ups, playing abroad in different environments (which some of them might not get if they're not at clubs involved in European football) & getting used to tournament football. I don't see winning at that level as the main priority but obviously it helps & should be lauded if they have success in a tournament. I get where you're coming from with your Rusk analogy though!

United were good in the final, although terrible against Coventry and from memory struggled against Newport I think? The point being you can absolutely be poor throughout a cup competition whilst still progressing. Good fortune and underserved results are a real thing.

But it’s daft to say that can carry you to two consecutive Euros finals and a WC semi (and QF).

Tuchel rumoured from a couple of normally credible journalists, I’d personally make him the best manager available on the market so would be a bit of a coup.

Great hit by TAA.
Doesn’t make the performance any better. So slow.

Great hit by TAA. Doesn’t make the performance any better. So slow. A game against such high-ranking opponents needed something special to secure all three points.

If finland were good we would have lost this or even if they have 3 or 4 decent players

Oh look. A bit of pace and desire to get past someone and that happens.

Only caught second half but has seemed reasonable from that point. Trent should be one of the first team sheet, can’t believe he’s never been a guaranteed starter whilst probably being the world’s best right back.
Hard to take anything from these glorified friendlies in all honesty. Hopefully we can chose our permanent manager quickly and start building something.
