Only caught second half but has seemed reasonable from that point. Trent should be one of the first team sheet, can’t believe he’s never been a guaranteed starter whilst probably being the world’s best right back. Hard to take anything from these glorified friendlies in all honesty. Hopefully we can chose our permanent manager quickly and start building something. I just don't see it, he's a great passer of the ball and that free kick was superb but he goes missing too much for me and he's not great defensively.

Each to their own of course but I couldn’t disagree more. Liverpool have been one of the best teams in the world for the best 6 years and he’s been their main creator, from right back. Defending isn’t his best attribute but I really think he’s no better or worse than the vast majority of full backs defensively. Most are pretty average. I don’t think there’s a club in world football who he doesn’t start for, seems like the only team he wouldn’t be guaranteed to start for is his national team. Hopefully that changes going forward.

Was saying elsewhere earlier that I just don't see the hype, so he was nailed on to do something like that. I very rarely watch the PL but I hear so much about how brilliant he is yet very rarely see anything to get excited about when I watch him play for England. I don't even see the passing thing. I regularly have a couple of 'FFS' moments a game where he unnecessarily gifts possession. If you're a world class defender that just shouldn't happen.

He does have flashes of brilliance but I noticed a fair few of those FFS moments tonight.

Hard to take anything from these glorified friendlies in all honesty. Heard the 'Friendly' word used a few time, but we could really do with getting promoted out of Nations League B as it means playing against better opposition going forward. (especially considering we're hosts for 2028 so presumably quality automatically? - wouldn't be ideal prep for that with only lower level Nations League games / friendlies in the 2 years proceeding)

Correct, just read up actually and seems likely that host nations will still enter the qualies, with the 2 places reserved for those that don't qualify.

That’s the most likely scenario from what I’ve read as well, nothing’s confirmed yet though.

Christ 😂 it’s never ending. Remember it was Southgate who had us relegated to the second tier of the nations league. There was barely a negative comment made at the time by anyone and rightfully so because no one is that bothered about the nations league. That doesn’t change when the manager does. “Those performances” Was yesterday’s performance that bad? It was a little drab but we won 3-1.

Either that or the one from Question of Sport. The bonus there is how the words 'God Save the King' can be inserted repeatedly into the rhythm, to mesmeric effect (try it, it's a gamechanger!) Nice. As an aside, I do that with lots of TV theme tunes that don't have words, sliding the title in wherever it fits. Or even where it doesn't. I'm simple like that. Match of the Day is on the telly/ It's on the telly now/ Match of the Day is on the telly/ It's on the telly now/ Match of the Day is on the telly/ It's on the telly now/ Match of the Day is on the telly/ And it's on the telly right now You have to slightly emphasise the first "the" in the penultimate line to make is scan satisfactorily, but it does work.

Beautiful. If I ever watched Match of the Day then nothing would stop me belting that out. I've been working on "University Challenge" (old version) but that's more, er, challenging. It's almost like it's not supposed to have lyrics, which is a bit mad.

Apparently Bamber Gascoigne used to keep a set of (slightly) easier bonus questions to one side, so if a team was being absolutely pwned by their opponents, they had an opportunity to have their blushes saved a bit if they managed to get the answer to a “starter for ten”. Jeremy Paxman didn’t operate this system, and IIRC the biggest winning margin ever (up to that point) unsurprisingly happened during his first series in charge. Bit of an ethical conundrum there to mull over while you have your dinner/mid-morning coffee depending on your timezone…

I'm not surprised that Paxman did not operate in the same fashion. I always preferred the questions on The Young Ones "Bambi" episode, though.
