How does it work if you have Angle or Saxon DNA? Is it a 'Nein'? Fair point. If Tuchel can prove he's just another Saxon coming over here looking for some decent grazing land and to get away from the Hunnic invasion then i'll let him off. He's from the Duchy of Schwaben, so he'll be Alemanni or Suebi ...

I thought he did an absolutely terrible job at Bayern, took over a team that won 11 league titles on the trot, signed one of the best strikers in the world, got knocked out of the cup by a lower league team, won nothing and managed to somehow come 3rd. I think his so called bad job at Bayern is slightly unfair. He took over from Nagelsman halfway through a season with the team in second and he ended up winning them the league. Then the following season (with Kane) they actually scored more points than the previous season but basically came up against one of the greatest teams and stories the Bundesliga has ever seen. Leverkusen were a sensation, they didn't lose a game all season and should have won a treble had they not totally f*cked up their final game of the season where they ran out of steam. No one was beating Leverkusen that season, I watched them a number of times and they were just brilliant. Outside of the Bundesliga he got Bayern to the champions league semi where they lost to the winners Real Madrid by a single goal on aggregate. I also think he had endless speculation about his future towards the end of the season and it badly effected their form. They ended up finishing 3rd after a few bad results but like I said, they still scored more points than the previous season where they won the league.

Last English manager to win the top division is Howard Wilkinson. Last English manager to win Europe's top club competition was Joe Fagan. Was Redknapp the last English manager to win a domestic trophy? Portsmouth 2008? Getting on for 20 years ago now. That’s ludicrous. Before that, there’s only been a handful to have won anything since football was invented in 1992; Ron Atkinson, Joe Royle, Roy Evans, Brian Little, Steve McLaren (and Redknapp). And just seen that’s there’s only a similar number to have even managed in the Champions League, let alone get near winning it; Redknapp, Bobby Robson, Ray Harford, Howard Wilkinson, Phil Thompson (as a caretaker) and Eddie Howe. (The CL I’ve just lifted from an article from 2018, but can only think of Howe to add to the list since then. Sure some smart arse will find another). Mind blowing. No wonder we’ve gone for a GERMAN.

In saying all this, we do have to acknowledge that the most recent permanent manager had done very little in this regard and, without opening up the debate about him again, he achieved more than any England manager since decimalisation. The names kicked about seem to extend to Howe and Potter. They may eventually get the job and they may do well. But it's very much about hoping the skills people say they have, in a coaching sense, translate to the international stage.
My understanding was that one of the critical purposes of the PL was to strengthen the national side. I reckon that after 32 years the assessment on that has to be 'mixed outcomes'.

Just read this article on Anthony Barry, the new assistant manager... www.bbc.co.uk/sport/football/articles/cz6wzl93223oJust taken this out of it: Barry's dissertation focused on throw-ins, which saw him watch 60 hours of footage involving every one of the 16,380 throw-ins taken in the 2018-19 Premier League season.
WOW- must admit that I can think of 1000 things I'd rather do for 60 hours than that, so fair play to him for his dedication to getting to the top.

Won the treble with PSG too and got them to a CL final, as well as winning the competition with Chelsea. Every manager has a bad year (except DC of course!). His fallouts and sport spells are a concern but I think that's less of an issue at international schedule which the schedule is relatively light.

They don't have to be english no, but they should be. The whole point of international football is that it's supposed to be pure and it's entirely based on your nations ability rather than the level of resources (obviously i'm aware that resources can and do lift ability but you know what I mean, in theory there could be a Messi who comes from Moldova) Personally I feel that it's a little bit embarassing that such a large footballing nation such as ourselves has gone for a foreign manager again but I can completely understand why they did it. It's not like some top english manager who was available has been overlooked for a foreign manager who was slightly better. Unless they were going to give the Saudis a bucketload of money to release Eddie Howe from his contract I can't really see any other suitable candidates. Unfortunately the top top level of managers just aren't english and to be honest haven't been for a long time. Tuchel is a good appointment and he gets my support but I can still support the appointment whilst thinking it's a shame there was no english candidate around. Fair enough. I think there's an argument around developing English coaches and thinking long term but most are just hungry for success and that elusive trophy. Out of curiosity, would you say the same for the backroom staff? Coaches, physio etc. Where does it end? Any professional seems reasonable. Maybe the team bus driver doesn’t need to be, but you wouldn’t want a Brazilian driving it to a World Cup final v Brazil!

Absolutely baffles me why teams don't spend more time on them. Jim's teams always did well with throw ins. Someone would walk away from the thrower then dart back and play a simple return to the thrower and we were up and running again. That fell off a cliff under Rusk and we just didn't have a clue. I think we overindex on long throws under Challinor, which is surprising given we often play short corners.

We took ages to take them and then did them up anyway. There were a few other things he had to sort with even more urgency, but you’re right both about their importance and how well JG sorted them.

As a half-German, what a great appointment, I say.
Soon the Wembley crowd will be singing "Herr we go, Herr we go, Herr we go!"
