Is it that english managers are not good enough or just following a new trend. Gary Lineker was making some good points yesterday that English Football is still playing catch up from the bygone days where long ball was the FA Blueprint (through Charles Hughes) and kids were playing on full size pitches at 7 / 8 (which I well remember doing). Interesting point, but I was thinking that we've now maybe overcome that disadvantage and it's now simply a case of a lack of opportunity for English coaches due to the fact the Premier League is basically a global Super League and therefore being an Englishmen is incidental to getting a job (add that it's happening in the Championship also, as the feeder league to the global Super League). What it needs is an English Manager to breakthrough and win something major - Eddie Howe is the obvious one, and had the Eddie Howe of today got the City job in 2009 when Mancini did then he's easily have won the Premier League, but there is a current logjam at the top of the Premier League (added to FFP / PSR) which is restricting Newcastle (in the way City in their ascendance weren't restricted) - Howe will therefore remain somewhat of an also ran when CV's (e.g. Trophies) are assessed.

When I talked yesterday about mixed outcomes for the PL, I think 'We need an Englishman to win a trophy managing a club doped with blood money from a despotic regime' probably goes in the minus column.

I'm looking forward to seeing what Tuchel can bring to the national side. God help him if he has a bad result though, that Daily mail headline was disgusting & a ball hasn't even been kicked yet under his stewardship. I dread to think what our gutter press will come up with if we lose a game.

Is it that english managers are not good enough or just following a new trend. Just like tactics. If one team is succesful in one department the rest will follow. Could not care less where the manager was born or came from as long as they can do the job and if DC left us today as long as we appoint the right man for the right reasons their birth certificate has no interest to me. Reading comments above from some with a voice in the MSM no wonder i,m not the only one who has lost interest in the international game. Just think of the uproar from them if he had been black or a muslim. Would show their true colours to the rest of the world. Tuchel will be our third foreign manager. It's over 20 years since the first. This is not some big 'Wow!' moment. I'll give you two good reasons why our RW press are behaving like c***s now: 1) He's not just foreign, he's German and these utter wet wipes still think we're fighting a war that ended over eight decades ago; and 2) They are pathetic little xenophobes who sadly now feel free to spread their tiny-minded shite, because in recent years this country has been made a whole lot less tolerant, in no small part thanks to the (often foreign) owners of their newspapers and the crap they pump out. Needless to say, it's all depressing as f*ck. I see Tuchel met it all with good humour yesterday, proving himself to have a better understanding of British culture than the sorry likes of Jeff Powell. I don't envy him the job though. Those talentless hacks will seek to destroy him from before the first ball is kicked. These are the people this country needs fewer of. One of the first questions asked was whether he'd sing the anthem. It's not surprising because of the reasons you've pointed out above, but it's so depressing. We're never going to change, though. Massively childish country.

Did 7/8 year olds really play full-size? I was never into playing as a youngster but the idea of my 7yo playing on a full-size compared to what he plays on now is absolutely ridiculous! It's all so different now. Kick-ins rather than throw-ins, no heading, half way line for a goal kick etc.

Or maybe they just felt like full size pitches because we were so small? A bit like how wagon wheels seemed the size of dust bin lids when I was 7

So I wouldn’t expect a German to sing it and what a stupid question to ask.

It’s not his country and it would be weird and to his detriment if he did sing it. Bore off you bunch of vultures.

Next question - Did your grandfather fight in the war? Don’t mention it. I mentioned it once, but I think I got away with it.

What made it worse was kids club games were played on a sunday the day after men played on the saturday on a rough surface, lines on the pitch partly missing all on top of a full sized pitch to contend with. No wonder people think keepers are mad trying their best for a poor side when they cannot jump and touch the crossbar due to their size. One thing now at least there are all weather pitches about with a choice of goal size and pitch dimentions.

I played for the cubs fon a full size pitch (Gatleytip)We literally couldn’t kick the ball out of the area for a goal kick and all the outfield players lined up on the edge of the area ready to pounce. I was made captain of boys much older than me and it gave me ibs… I have always been a very delicate soul.

Even worse there were so many pitches built on a slope with prevailing winds blowing down the hill. Even when i moved to norfolk i got a shock after expecting pitches to be like the terrain. Somehow they seemed to find even a small slope to build a pitch on it and the club house and car park being on totally flat ground. It would not be too bad if the FA regarded kids and parks football as the grass roots of the game. Thats reserved for teams like mossley or ashton united.
