Gary Lineker was making some good points yesterday that English Football is still playing catch up from the bygone days where long ball was the FA Blueprint (through Charles Hughes) and kids were playing on full size pitches at 7 / 8 (which I well remember doing). Interesting point, but I was thinking that we've now maybe overcome that disadvantage and it's now simply a case of a lack of opportunity for English coaches due to the fact the Premier League is basically a global Super League and therefore being an Englishmen is incidental to getting a job (add that it's happening in the Championship also, as the feeder league to the global Super League). What it needs is an English Manager to breakthrough and win something major - Eddie Howe is the obvious one, and had the Eddie Howe of today got the City job in 2009 when Mancini did then he's easily have won the Premier League, but there is a current logjam at the top of the Premier League (added to FFP / PSR) which is restricting Newcastle (in the way City in their ascendance weren't restricted) - Howe will therefore remain somewhat of an also ran when CV's (e.g. Trophies) are assessed. Did 7/8 year olds really play full-size? I was never into playing as a youngster but the idea of my 7yo playing on a full-size compared to what he plays on now is absolutely ridiculous! It's all so different now. Kick-ins rather than throw-ins, no heading, half way line for a goal kick etc. Excellent rules and playing on Astro helps massively. I really don’t like it when Kimberley has to play on grass (she doesn’t like it much either). We did play on more or less full size pitches when kids. I did don’t play much club footie as a kid. Each team was a bit cliquey and the pitches were shite. There was nowhere near the level or organisation and coaching that you see in the game nowaday and take for granted. The two things I remember players shouting the most when playing adult footie were: back and face and GET RID. The latter one depressed me. Played footie in Spain and Brazil’s nd you never heard anyone shouting anything similar. Our football culture was sh!te back then and a big reason why were so sh!t as a national team.

Next question - Did your grandfather fight in the war? Don’t mention it. You started it!

All these Daily Mail virgins crying about England have a German manager will be quick enough to tug their forelocks for the royal family, won’t they. Without even the slightest little bit of awareness of the irony.

Funny how kids also prefer astro to grass unlike adults do. Just wonder if its the weather that caused the difference in attitudes between those countries and the UK. We are still a country though were work rate, fitness and being a trier is heralded by many fans over real skill because some lower teams have succeeded with teams like that but show their limitations in the end.

I much prefer varnished floors. Astro and grass give better players more control of the ball and I'm bobbins. Varnished floors mean control is more difficult so I get a look in. Coupled with being fit from cycling from Leeds city centre to the highest point in the city twice a week I'm now quite good at football. It's taken me 44 years to achieve this feet and I'd love to go back to school days to equalise things 🙃

What made it worse was kids club games were played on a sunday the day after men played on the saturday on a rough surface, lines on the pitch partly missing all on top of a full sized pitch to contend with. No wonder people think keepers are mad trying their best for a poor side when they cannot jump and touch the crossbar due to their size. One thing now at least there are all weather pitches about with a choice of goal size and pitch dimentions. I played for the cubs fon a full size pitch (Gatleytip)We literally couldn’t kick the ball out of the area for a goal kick and all the outfield players lined up on the edge of the area ready to pounce. I was made captain of boys much older than me and it gave me ibs… I have always been a very delicate soul. Mad just reading that. Did no one think that can't be that much fun let alone good for developing footballers. I guess goalposts and pitch lines are the one bit of extra "equipment" you need for a competitive game of football and this was before portable goals. I played at cub/junior level and as a smaller kid really struggled to get in the game. I've got plenty of memories of the ball (and players) getting stuck in the mud or goalkeepers not being able to out kick the wind even on half size pitches. That said, I wasn't much better when we played 5 a-side indoors! No surprise we've struggled to develop technical footballers to match the likes of Spain.

So the deal was done 2 days before Greece. I think gave Carsley too much stick. He must have known and it probably explains his experimental lineup (what did he have to lose?) and noncommital answers as to whether he wanted the job. It's pretty shitty by the FA imo placing him in a difficult spot. It almost certainly explains his non committal answers to journalists questions. No point in saying you want it when you know someone else already has the job.

End of the day they’re all interbred. Even Diana (the people’s princess dontchaknow) was something like Charlie’s 15th cousin.

I know I'm probably not in line with mainstream opinion (or lazy comedy slags*), but... well, he's not German, is he? Neither was the Queen. Charles' great great great grandmother married a German. And you have to go back to 1727 to reach an ancestor that wasn't born in England.
I get that with royalty it's all about houses, and bloodlines and all that upper class inbred bollocks, but... German? How many of us could claim our current nationality if one of our 3x great grandparents wasn't the same?
So yeah, Carsley, eh? Never getting the job.
*Ringo was a great drummer. f*ck off.

It was definitely 11 a side when I first played Football for Our Ladies Primary in 1st Year Juniors at 7 or 8, not sure if exactly a full size pitch but must have been close (Our Ladies played on Heathfield Annex on Shaw Heath, also recall playing on Hollywood Park which pretty sure was full size). What made it worse was kids club games were played on a sunday the day after men played on the saturday on a rough surface, lines on the pitch partly missing all on top of a full sized pitch to contend with. One thing now at least there are all weather pitches about with a choice of goal size and pitch dimentions. You've just described my childhood football experience! I'm 5'7" (and a bit!) so you can guess I wasn't the tallest as a kid either. I was a goalkeeper, playing on said pitches with said goals, but with something akin to Lake Titicaca consuming the the centre of the goal line! I was covered, no caked in mud regularly, as if jumping wasn't hard enough as a short arse, try it wigged down on wet kit and thick, wet mud! 🤣
