Yeah. Just to be clear, I’m not suggesting the King is German. Just that the family held up by a lot of these people as the embodiment of Britishness has relatively recent heritage from countries across continental Europe and elsewhere, much like a lot of the population in that respect. It’s a good thing. It makes us interesting as a country. So arbitrary ideas of Englishness or Britishness aren’t just about where you’re born. All the performative nonsense from the usual lot who are pretending to be outraged we now have a German manager is exactly that. Just blatantly bollocks. The guy wanted the job, speaks perfect English, knows this country well from living here, seems to get it. He’s welcome. I did my DNA through 23 and me a few years ago. I'm 89% British and Irish. The rest is made up of French, German, Scandinavian and 0.1% West African. So all this English until I die shit is just rubbish. I am not sure what they base this on. It seems a bit gimmicky/snake oil to me. How far back are they basing the French genes on for example? What is the data set for it? We all came out of Africa originally - the original garden of Eden

I know I'm probably not in line with mainstream opinion (or lazy comedy slags*), but... well, he's not German, is he? Neither was the Queen. Charles' great great great grandmother married a German. And you have to go back to 1727 to reach an ancestor that wasn't born in England. I get that with royalty it's all about houses, and bloodlines and all that upper class inbred bollocks, but... German? How many of us could claim our current nationality if one of our 3x great grandparents wasn't the same? So yeah, Carsley, eh? Never getting the job. *Ringo was a great drummer. f*ck off. Sorry. I cannot fathom it out from what you've written. But are you saying Ringo was, or was not, a great drummer? I'm saying he was. It's a reference to the Jasper Carrott (not John Lennon) quip that "he wasn't even the best drummer in the Beatles!!!!!11123lol"

I absolutely hate this Social Media trope...usually propagated by arseholes who know sod all about drumming and even less about the Beatles.

Not a fan and there were much better bands in the 60's. Small Faces, The Who, Rolling Stones, The Kinks etc.

There's a video on YouTube of a wide range of very well known and highly regarded drummers in their own right talking about Ringo, and, er, just how good he really is.

But you don't go from With The Beatles to Let It Be without having any talent, ability or musicality. There were other talented bands around at the same time, but they weren't better. The Stones second single was a Beatles song, that Lennon and McCartney gave to them, they finished writing it in front of them.

No of course they’re not. The European royal families aren’t really any nationality, they’re a web of incest.

Thing that always particularly amuses me about the 'Royals are all Germans' argument is the people making it are generally the same people who are quite offended when someone refers to a British person whose grandparents were born elsewhere as Pakistani / Jamaican / Nigerian etc.
I guess that depends if they’re making the point sincerely (about them all being German) or doing it in an ironic faux English nationalism tone. I’m not sure I’ve ever met anyone who considers immigrants to be as English as anyone also sincerely make the Royals are all Germans point. Could be wrong of course.

There’s some degree of accuracy in there but someone could have Norwegian for example and not had a single ancestor who came anywhere near Norway - but might have had a first cousin somewhere in their multiple greats who did move there and now there’s some common dna between the areas. It’s not quite snake oil, but it’s not far off. The only part of dna analysis that I think has any real value is stuff about testing for cancer and other disease risks etc.

Nailed it. I don’t like everything the Beatles did, far from it, but there’s plenty I love. Just lit a Beatles tribute act at the Plaza and some of those songs are timeless. Of course I ended up with Obla Di Obla Bloodh Da stuck in my head though didn’t I? Couldn’t have been Come Together could it?

Someone once said to me that the Beatles were working class lads making middle class music and the Stones were middle class lads making working class music.
I don’t necessarily agree with it, but it’s lived rent free in my head ever since.
And this was one of my favourite songs growing up. As a kid I was all about the Stones but only appreciated the Beatles as I got older
