It’s not enough to have one pacy player in your team especially when they are a wing back/full back. We struggled massively breaking down the best teams in this league last year due to our lack of pace (except for MSH) throughout the team, Rooney not suiting the 10 role and the lack of balance in the 3412 with everybody coming towards the ball. We’ve had the off season to readdress it and it looks like we’re just going to carry on regardless and largely ignore the issue. This league is the strongest it’s ever been, we’ve undoubtedly spent the most money but I’m not at all confident that we’ll finish ahead of Chesterfield, Wrexham and Notts and if we don’t the blame firmly lies with Rusk and Wilson. Good post wnm. My feelings exactly 100%. We need to get at the opposition and attack them MSM does have pace and how many times did he quickly get down the pitch and his ball in was missed as others were slow to get forward or he had to wait for our players to get forward and was dispossessed, by the fullback recovering, while he waited. Quigley offers some pace but in addition we need someone else with electric pace similar to Tshimanga.

Quigley looks pacey. Not electric pace but enough to run in behind teams. He does but I don’t think it’s going to be enough to turn us in to title winners against such strong competition. I like all our signings individually and quality wise they improve us but as good as I think Ross, Fish and Barclay will be they are strengthening an area that we were already strong in and Whitfield is a waste of a signing if we’re sticking with last season’s formation. Nothing we’ve done this summer turns the needle and by the time we realise it I think it will be too late and we’ll be relying on the lottery of the playoffs again. I think it’s going to be a completely different season to last with fans and proper competition for the relegation spots. We’re also clearly going for solid rather than spectacular. So I think it’ll be a case of creating good chances rather than lots of chances. I expect quite a few 1nils etc. Lot of pressure on Madden, Reid and Quigley to deliver consistently plus the odd rabbit out of a hat from Rooney. Expect it’s not going to be to everyone’s taste as there was a lot of moaning about possession based footy last season but we’ll be hard to beat again and I’m confident that we’ll see our home form improve - hopefully it’s enough for a title challenge!

We'll be hard to beat but we'll have goals from Quigley which we didn't have last season, goals from Madden who we only had in the latter part, we'll still have goals from Rooney and Reid, I expect us to batter quite a few teams.

We are significantly stronger than the start of last season… but so are 2 or 3 others. It’ll be tough to finish top and it’ll come down to how good a coach Rusk is. He said in his interview after the Hartlepool gamehow much he was looking forward to working his way in preseason and beyond. Fingers crossed he knows what he’s doing. He can’t blame lack of resources. Top 3 minimum with significantly more points than last season would be ok. Nobody can guarantee top spot, and I don’t think you can sack a manager for not coming top thinking you will replace with someone who will guarantee top spot?? Personally I think Rusk will properly grow into it this season and we’ll win it.

I expect same as last season - lots of clean sheets, we’ll batter most of the cannon fodder and then come unstuck against the better teams due to the exact same issues we had last season not being addressed this summer. I’d then hope Wilson and Rusk are shown the door.

We only have to sustain the form we had in the 2nd half of last season but turn just a few draws into wins and we'll reach 100 points. That pretty much does guarantee top spot historically. Of course football never turns out as simply as that but that's my cause for optimism.

What Grimsby are reporting about us this season.
“ Stockport have a front line that wouldn’t look out of place in League Two, never mind the National League.
Having been in the race for the title last season, their eventual defeat to Hartlepool in the play-offs just demonstrates how difficult it is to get out of this division.
They’ve gone big in their attempts to make sure they go up this time around though, with Scott Quigley joining from Barrow, and with Paddy Madden and John Rooney already in their ranks, they look to have a potent attack for the new season.
Tom Walker also looks to be an astute signing, having made his loan from Harrogate last season permanent, while Ben Barclay’s arrival from Accrington Stanley strengthens the heart of their defence – they’ll be expecting another title push this season.”

all that is true. the thing is if everything did go to plan 2 of the big 4 in this league are still going to be in it in 12 months time. we just have to make sure we are not one of them. i,ll take being bored to death in every game if that puts us over the line.

I can't imagine there's been a season in our history where the expectation of our league position has been so high

I can't imagine there's been a season in our history where the expectation of our league position has been so high not too sure about that. this season is different in that there will be no slack for the manager and players if this is not achieved. we have had downers in the past especially in danny,s years but that was a hope for promtion dashed and not expectation being dashed.

There was plenty of hope in Danny's years, and lots last season, don't think it was on the scale we are now

There was plenty of hope in Danny's years, and lots last season, don't think it was on the scale we are now I agree. I was very young in the Danny Bergara era but I don’t ever remember a season where 3rd could be seen as a disappointment. Not by me, 3rd would be fine by me as long as we got to the playoff final, but I know some would see not finishing top 2 or maybe even top 1 as a failure. I don’t know if that’s ever been the case before in my lifetime, even 96/97.
