I managed to get over to the meeting the Edgeley Nature reserve group put on tonight. I made some notes as my memory is terrible, main ones I’ll stick in here. Overall I get where they’re coming from - it’s a green space that won’t be there any more because of a car park. But the reasons they’re using didn’t really seem to hold up, the lady hosting is a resident of the road that looks onto the land and I got the overwhelming sense that this was more about her own quality of life. A lot of what they were saying was very emotionally driven which is understandable but won’t really do much when argued against the planners, ecologists etc that will be consulted as part of the planning application. There was a relatively good turn out - 50 or so on a week night. Two of the newly elected councillors were there which was good to see, they put Matt Wynne on the spot at the end and asked him direct “what are you as a councillor elected by us going to do to help us?”. His response was pretty much that unless there’s a substantial proven negative impact on the areas biodiversity then there’s not much anyone can do as the land is leased to the club to do with what they want. Other bits I took away from it were: - the site is Approx 1.6 acres total, clubs proposal is to use half of it for a car park for execs and players, plans not being submitted until summer having been pushed back from the original plan to submit Spring just gone - Group has talked to the club and looked at plans, they agreed when talking to the chairman that they’d be happy with just half the space being used as a car park, but said he ‘charmed’ them at the time and they’ve since decided they’re against that and don’t want the patch of land to be touched at all - they feel other car parks around the area could be used and even surveyed local car parks when the pools match was on, to see how many spaces there were available already - the reserve group have proposed that a new car park is built but only runs to about 2 spaces deep in parallel with the pop side - they’re asking people to sign a petition and send a letter to the council opposing the car park - their main worries are removal of green space and loss of biodiversity, they think the space should be turned into reserve for trees and wildlife, use it for schools to learn about nature - they questioned why the CE car park and railway end car park can’t be used instead - they believe that the council have not stuck to an agreement made when the land was ‘given to the people of Edgeley’, to keep the area wild - if it was turned into a reserve, they propose that it would be closed to the public, apart from schools, community groups etc. - they’re waiting for the club to submit plans (likely in a couple of weeks), they’ll then submit the petition against those plans, that argument against the car park will then go to the relevant committee for them to review So they want a piece of land for the community but only want community groups to be able to access it, how very inclusive of them.

Also think I saw fallowfield hatter there? (Sorry if not). Wanted to come over and say hello but bottled it at the risk of seeming like some sad weirdo and / or getting battered by the guy sat behind me who seemed to be against anything remotely connected to County You did indeed see me pal. I was getting very exasperated at some of the outright bollocks being muttered by the two Hardcastle Road residents behind me so me and my mate beat a hasty retreat as soon as we saw there were no biscuits.

Although I did gasp when Matt Wynne mentioned there was no covenant in the lease of EP, aside from the 'no rugby' one, which he thought was a weird one. Literally five minutes of research from him would have explained it, but no.

that's the bit that proves it's all just Nimbyism really.
We want to do this, make it look pretty, but not ever have anyone trampling through it.
I get where they're coming from - turning green spaces (even crappy ones) into car parks is never desirable, but it ultimately comes down to don't buy a house by a football ground if you don't want to be affected by football.

Really the club are only looking for 0.8 of an acre of wasteland to build a car park. They will still have the same amount left plus other green stuff in the area. In some ways they are getting away with changes better than some residents get in other places where the whole swamp could be drained, trees felled and a new mini housing estate being built there with an access road used 24 hours a day 7 days a week.

Offering two good size strips of land to shield the reservoir and the houses sounds like a good generous compromise from the club Just removing any knotweed or rubbish/contamination from those areas will mean a major strip back and removal of the fauna and subsoil so a replanting plan will have to happen anyway

Would they support residents of an area if we moved grounds and built one close to other residential properties who bought their house without a football ground being near intead of one previously there like they did. Its like me hating pop music and buying close to a pub who might not play any now but could do in the future.

The most confusing bit about it for me is why THAT piece of land is ideal for a nature reserve? On one side you have a large noisy football stadium with activity going on there throughout the week, on the other you have large railway warehouses and train tracks, combine that with the planes flying over every 15 minutes and I honestly don’t see that as being somewhere wildlife is going to thrive in. There was a presentation on birds seen in the area too but it wasn’t clear whether they were nesting there or if they’d just been seen from the ladies window, again the reasons against seemed to be based on personal opinion as opposed to fact.

I've read a few things over the years suggesting that bits of scrappy waste ground tend to be much more biodiverse than you'd expect - roadside verges being a classic example in that a relative lack of active management encourages lots of flora and fauna to grow as the spaces aren't really touched at all.
Problem with that theory for this specific site is that it's ridden with Japanese knotweed.

Get them wanting to connect schools with nature, so why the hell aren't they developing the reservoir & local park which are both established sites 10 minutes walk away

Sounds like this wasn't a proper meeting but just a chance for a few small minded people to agree with each other. They have a meeting with the club and agree a compromise over space but then backtrack when they've get together again over a glass of homemade newt wine presumably. Seriously the trouble here is that these few will get too full of their own self importance. I'm sure the club can handle it but wonder whether we as fans need to be a bit more vocal over the positives, either individually or as a group. We don’t want the progress of our club hindered unfairly or unnecessarily.

The coop would be the obvious suggestion to do it maybe?
