Well, as someone who literally works in the news, I disagree strongly with the accuracy of this. But what do I know. highest number of deaths since WW2 for a start. there was a year in the early 2000,s beating them both. even if the statement was correct does it help publishing something that no one can do anything about but frightening some people. The thing is we can all do something about, sometimes people need to be scared before they act sensibly.

Some people need to be frightened into acting. There are people who still think it’s no big deal. We’re working with a lowest common denominator here.

There are 21 arriving flights at Manchester Airport today.3 are from Qatar,2 from Dubai and 1 from Abu Dhabi plus 2 from Islamabad! So as most of these passengers are coming from countries where Covid is still rife and just transfer through the Middle East we will never get on top of this virus. It is a big deal and i know people are not being checked

The thing is we can all do something about, sometimes people need to be scared before they act sensibly. its frightening the wrong people. some like plenty of young males will always do there own thing no matter what news is put out. its the more vulnerable that are being scared witless by this and are the the ones following all the rules and guidelines.

We need to draw a distinction between broadcast and print news, and opinion. News reporting is accurate, as BWScarf says. But then you get absolute whoppers like Julia H-B on Talksport and Toby Young in the Telegraph (and there are dozens and dozens of others, as we all know), literally speaking/writing lies.
And the problem with that is that they somehow become accepted as the voice of "the other side" in the false equivalence reporting that particularly affects the BBC at the moment. Young literally told lies in the Telegraph in July (even the pathetic IPSO censured him), lies that have killed people, and yet he remains a regular on Newsnight, for example.

Young literally told lies in the Telegraph in July (even the pathetic IPSO censured him), lies that have killed people, and yet he remains a regular on Newsnight, for example. Yep, nailed it. We’ve had the conversation before, but the lack of distinction between, on the one hand: a largely unregulated/very poorly regulated print media, which has some good journalists but is largely stuffed with political shills and sensationalists; and on the other: very heavily regulated broadcast media with a genuine commitment to truth, really frustrates me. It denigrates my profession. Not to say broadcast media are perfect at all. There are some people too willing to take someone’s word for it. And the worst is this grey area between broadcast and print - the TalkRadio/LBC types. I hate the existence of ‘commentators’. They tend to be contrarian right-wingers who say controversial things for attention, though there are a few on the left too. It’s embarrassing that they’re given a platform despite often being poorly-informed, yet almightily confident in their (factually incorrect) opinions. Julia H-B, D*rren Gr*mes, Brendan O’Neill, Owen Jones, Ash Sarkar. Etc. They’re not journalists. They’re propagandists. And in some cases, outright grifters. All this is quite a long way of saying it’s not about scaring people. It’s about showing them a true picture to get across the seriousness of the situation. A year ago, we were being pilloried for over-exaggerating this mystery illness which was going to be something and nothing.

If it's frightening the most vulnerable then it's frightening the right people Unfortunately not bothering with the rules, or being oblivious by deliberately not watching the news is not confined to the fit and healthy. My wife’s best friend’s husband just got it from his twin brother as he happily helped him laying some lino. They both have leukaemia, CPOD and asthma and have been meeting up every so often throughout the pandemic. They purported that they were ‘safe’ because they didn’t do anything risky - even though they had been in and out of supermarkets and cafes at every opportunity. They’re both in ICU but look to be pulling through. I’m finding it hard to feel too much sympathy, especially as my stepdaughter is a paramedic on the frontline, but pleased for my wife that things are getting better. It just shows that you can put as much news, info etc out there but there are some that don’t really want to know.

It's the people who are most vulnerable who most need to be frightened/encouraged to follow the rules, if they are following the rules then it's worked

Looks like the scoreboard has been taken down.
EDIT: JK just said the scoreboard is being worked on and mentioned it being replaced, although I think he may have meant put back up.

Sounds like a complete replacement. Right thing to do I guess as the old new one came across so poorly on television and was too bright at night games

Talking of things being taken down, did the Dowie flag go before the Wham game?

It's still there in the RE.
They said the scoreboard is an upgrade which will feature replays.
