The fulsome praise heaped on Davenport's Bargain Booze (which, like that whole row of shops, is not actually in Davenport but in either Cale Green or Heaviley, depending on who you talk to..but that discussion needs a whole other thread) makes me appreciate how lucky I am that it's literally thirty yards from my front door. So it's not so much an off-licence for me as an incredibly well-stocked pay-as-you-go fridge. The Northern Irish bloke who runs it is also a pretty committed Newcastle fan, so I get free with every purchase an update on the latest takeover rumours or a critique of Steve Bruce's selection policy. Now you can't argue with that for customer service. Oh yes and their beers are good- eg yes the Titanics which I've only ever seen in there. Like Bredders though I'm mostly a premium/ big name lager man, and the best for me are Peroni and... If you haven't tried it yet and are that way inclined then another Italian one Menabrea is a lovely tipple. Don't actually think they do it in BB but any Co-op stocks it, 2 X 660ml for four quid, 4.7% of springtime refreshingness. Same here, it's a couple of minutes walk for me too, its a real hidden gem I think, I've had some belters from there over the years including some eye wateringly expensive (for a can) Northern Monk beers!

Has anyone been to Breaking Glass Bottles, the new bottle shop in the town centre? I went just before Christmas if I'm thinking of the same place (Owned by Joe from the Glass Spider/Cracked actor?). Some decent brews in there and quite a lot of obscure stuff but a lot of it is very expensive. Best places in Stockport (IMO) are the Epicurean, Bottle Stop, Archive, BB, Heaton Hops, Bottle, The Beer Shop and Petersgate Tap. Carringtons in Chorlton is also a brilliant place to go especially if you like German stuff.

Sampled a Titanics plum porter in the Boars head a while back & it was delicious, very heavy though, almost constituted a meal in itself

A beer thread is definitely something I can get behind. I'm a fan of strong beers, stouts and double/triple IPAs mostly, just because I love the intense flavours. Only tend to have a couple in a night for obvious reasons. My recent orders have been from Buxton and Vocation, both great breweries. If you spot the Vocation Cherry Imperial Kirsch in Tesco definitely give it a try, totally unique and imho amazing. It's a fiver a can but at 11% it's the same amount of booze as a couple of decent strength lagers.

I have a bottle of Innis & Gunn Islay whisky cask in my fridge 7.4 ABV. A mate gave it to me as in his words he said "you like weird beers & whisky" which i do but i'm sort of scared to give it a go! It's aged in laphroaig whisky casks, i like a single malt but once had a bottle of laphroaig & found it hard to drink due to it's overly peaty taste almost akin to TCP so i'm convinced the beer is going to taste the same....only one way to find out i suppose! We're all rooting for you, 73.

Love a sour so I thank you for the tip. My wife and bank balance however.... They aren't the cheapest truth be told but absolutely is worth it. Maybe use Paypal and blag it is an early Chrimbo present... How much he spends on beer never bothered him before doubt it will now unless your getting tight

Donkeystone Brewery do I think a triple IPA called 'Hop Wrasslin III' in a 5L Keg (it's not always on sale mind...I guess they brew a batch then sell it sharpish). Tried it a few weeks back. Blew me into Sunday from Saturday evening. But very, very nice.

Chuffed to see a thread up and running on beer!! Had one last night that was an India Pale Lager (first I've seen of them), called Running with Sceptres. Was nice, would say it swayed as an IPA though rather than lager. Gonna throw in a shameless plug now, I have a dedicated Instagram page for my beer log - Beers with Lloyd! I'm by no means a connoisseur, mostly chat rubbish but helps keep track of the craft beers I've had. Made it at the start of the pandemic (like a lot of other pages) Hit us up

Anybody seen or tried the football themed stuff from the "Away Days Beer company"? They do "Ale 'n Shearer" and "Wayne Brewney" amongst others. Its mostly Ipswich themed though as the guy that runs it is a fan. They have Hoppy Robson as one of their offerings, for instance. Recently they launched "Lambertout mid table ale"! Seems to have worked as he was removed yesterday.

I like ruby coloured ales, my favourite being Sara Hughes dark ruby mild. Alas its not available in can or bottle. However, recently in Sainsbury's I saw an ale that caught my eye from Badger brewery in Dorset. Beer is Cranbourne Poacher. A deliciously dark ruby ale with slight fruity hints that comes in at a healthy 5.7% abv. I loved it so much I've bought loads direct from the brewery. They also do the more well known Fursty ferret which is an amber ale, Blandford fly which is an amber ale with a touch of ginger and is awesome! I've also tried a stout of theirs which was ok. Going back to prices, I think anyone who is paying over £5 for a can of beer has more money than sense. You can get just as good a product for a lot less. I've tried both ends of the spectrum and find the expensive beers have too much going on. As if they are trying to justify the price tag.
