Looks like he has 2 good feet, plenty of pace and skill Done well to avoid him leaning towards Pisa Although at just short of 5”10 he’ll hardly tower over anyone.

Yeah that's the most likely outcome if he does move on. Would be incredibly frustrating given that most of us pointed out the pitfalls of signing a player who's just come from a 16k a week wage (his Stoke wages, who knows what his wages here are), was 29, signed on a 3 year deal and had warning signs around his attitude. Just hope it can be resolved as he's a quality player and i'm desperate for him to do well here. He did ok last season after a very iffy start and I just feel that we need to get at least one really good season out of him. He looked very good against weak teams likes Grimsby and Doncaster (who were a shambles when we turned them over) but rarely, if ever, did anything against the better sides. For the money he was on, the talent he has etc you'd expect him to be putting in the performances against Mansfield, Wrexham, MK etc and that just didn't happen. Hinchliffe, Horsfall, MSH (when fit), Pye, Barry, Sarcevic (when fit) all played at a consistently high level last season, even the likes of Evans (when he came back), who many regarded as a write-off, showed more than Powell did. If he stays and pulls his finger out and is consistently performing then everyone is happy. But he didn't do it last season, and has rarely done it in his career over the past 12 years or so, so not sure why we expect things to suddenly change now. Last season he was ok for us. For the money and his reputation he should definately have done more though. I do feel like it's a tad unfair to say he's rarely performed consistently in his career though. His 3 years with Wigan (2 in the championship and 1 in league one) he was quality they wanted to re-sign him but he moved to Stoke for more money. He was good for Stoke too for two seasons in the championship, got a player of the season one of the years he was there. Whilst he did fade badly at the end amid dressing room fall outs (according to my Stoke supporting mate) it's unfair to paint him has someone who's rarely performed consistently well across his career. I think he's just a bit of a prickly character and he's someone who needs everything around him to be right to perform. We shouldn't have signed him in my opinion but we did. Now that we are a season into it and he's at least settled i'd like us to try as hard as possible to get consistent performances out of him. Don't know what the issues are but it's too early into his contract to quit now, we've got to persevere imo.

For the money he's on, even if we don't know the exact figure he'll be the highest earner, he's got to be better. He'd probably just about get into the top ten players of last season. Or would he? Either way, he's got to be better next season.

We got promoted and he played a part, so in the grand scheme of Stott's investment it could be argued that it's been a good signing, as ultimately the aim of the season was achieved.

It could, but it'd be a fairly flimsy argument to say we were promoted because of him being in the team. which I know isn't quite what you said, but isn't far off. If we'd have not had him would we still have gone up? Probably. He wasn't an Olafoe, Horsfall or Hinchliffe player of importance where he was pivotal for our success.

Think I'm more saying that in the logic of Stott's thinking / investment, etc, it's possibly a case of him being happy to spend X to get Y. He spent X and got Y, of which Powell helped somewhat to get that Y. Retrospectively, the breakdown of the individual contributions against the specific money invested in each of the individuals is possibly not that important to Stott (though obviously will determine future decisions at a Wilson level).

Its a bit of straw clutching regarding his importance of him gaining promotion. Its not as if we looked a better or worse side if he played or not unlike a few others when they were unavailable or had an off day.

I think the 'somewhat' is doing a lot of heavy lifting there. And I do get what you're saying, but I still think we'd have been promoted without him and so we should be a bit more careful with throwing that money around, regardless of whether it's team budget or Stott's own money (which I know is essentially the same thing). He definitely contributed, but so did Lewis Cass and Todd Kane. And we arguably got more value for money out of those two given the money we ploughed into Powell. Again, I'm not saying Powell did nothing. He did. But he could be a lot better. Post-Christmas he was 6/10 for me last year with lots of room for improvement. Pre-Christmas his overall contribution was more like like a 3-4/10. Compared to Hinchliffe, Horsfall, Pye etc where you'd be giving 8.5/10 as an absolute minimum across the whole season.

If we were to cut losses with powell one way or another. Attacking mids we only have fiorini and Bailey. Bailey who for me personally, isn't good enough for League 1. We would need to find someone who can actually work in at 10 and also an 8 instead of a 10 in certain formations/systems His name has been mentioned before on here but someone like will patching would be a good option. Having watched him a few times this season (Ireland league is different times) since he got mentioned, I've been impressed and derry have played 4231 and 352, and he's played 8,10, and even upfront. Transfermarkt says his contract is up at the end of the season in Ireland which is November time so it wouldn't cost much if anything - maybe just throw a sell on clause to get him before his contract runs up at an awkward time for English football Bailey will have a big season this year, looked very sharp so far in pre season If our first choice formation ends up being 343 then Bailey’s going to see very little game time.

Can't see us playing with 3-4-3 our midfield is just going to be too light. Bate and Fiorini look great techincal players but would get eaten a alive off the ball just two of them in there. Same for all our combinations with Camps or Powell etc.
I think it'll be 4-3-3 or 4-diamond-2 but if we have to go back to script, which could be often in this league as there are lots of tough challenges, we'll go back to the bread and butter 3-5-2.
