Hereford get reasonable gates for their level not dissimilar to the gates they got when in the league, Darlington have struggled to find a proper home after Feethams or the great white elephant that was the Reynolds arena. Can't blame anyone for not wanting to visit the Deva on a regular basis as it's one of the most soulless flat packs in the country but Chester are still one of the best supported clubs at NLN level. York should never have moved out of their beautiful city to a lego kit on a retail park & FCUM are just a bunch of spoilt ex-dungers who probably thought they'd be in the premier league within 15 years of their formation. But the point being made was that none of them get anything like the crowds they got when they first formed/reformed and it was all plain sailing, flying through the divisions winning title after title. Yeah mate understand your point but I don't remember Darlo or Chester having substantially larger crowds than they used to get upon their reformation? Hereford have probably tailed off a little bit but are still at similar level to their football league gates. York are still the original entity aren't they? FCUM are certainly a good example of what you're implying, I'm certainly not hearing about them taking 2000 away anymore like they did initially & their home gates are down to about 1700.

A winning team always attracts more people through the gates than a losing one. When Chester won the National North the year before we got there they averaged 2500. We averaged similar for the first 2 years then c3500 for the next 3 before averaging 4002 in our NLN Championship season. 4300 in the NL the year before Covid and 7100 the year we won the league (again!) culminating in 9100 last year. Every season we increased our average and every season we finished higher than the season before. Back playing in the National League York averaged just shy of 5000 last season - their highest since 1985!.

Both Bury and Macc now have the opportunity to increase their fan base in part due to maintaining their "spiritual" home and also having the financial clout to be able to field a side that consistently win games both at home and away. Evidence from elsewhere suggests possibly not long-term. Looking at Hereford, Darlington, Chester, York, FCUM shows an initial bounce, big crowds, quick promotions. Then hit a wall, usually somewhere around National North/South or National League, the climb stops, the price has to go up to something more realistic, more segregation etc..comes in, it stops being such fun, and crowds plateau and fall. Unless they get quite a bit of luck and/or someone rich takes over I can see similar happening with Macc and Bury. They,ll all get eventually what gates they always got in the divisions they have previously played in. There will be info somewhere on the average home attendances all these clubs got in different divisions. Not bothered about FCUM as they are what they are and will always get some appeal but will be limited.

Even with a winning team and fans being inquisitive of a new ground i never expected the place to kick the club on because of its position in the city. Do think the covid missed season is still pushing gates up but can see them falling back in a few years time unless clubs are doing well. Posession football with games that could last nearly 2 hours will not be everyones idea especially on cold tuesday nights.

Next year it'll be back to normal.
